The CEO of gloHELP ( Mrs. Uche Daodu) and her project team carried out a Sensitization on Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) at the Ondo State School for the Hearing & Speech Impaired in Akure, Akure South LGA on 2nd August, 2016 where Deworming drugs were administered to the Students. Health Talk was given prior to the administration of the Deworming drugs. The School Staff were very supportive during the exercise as they assisted with the arrangement of the Students class by class while drugs were administered by gloHELP team and the School Clinic Staff. The heights and age of the Students were measured to determine the dosage for each student. The drugs were administered class by class, from Primary 1-6, JSS 1-3 and SSS 1-3.
The number of students attended to was Five Hundred and Seventy-Six (Male-303, Female-273 = 576). The first drugs administered were “Albendazole and Mectizan” while Praziquantel was administered a few weeks later according to age and height for prevention against ‘Onchocerciasis’ caused by Filarial Worms, ‘Lymphatic Filariasis or Elephantiasis’ caused by an organism called Wuchereria Banchrofti, ‘Schistomiasis’ caused by fresh water snails e.t.c. Various questions ranging from effects of the drugs, hygiene and major causes of the diseases were asked and duly answered. The exercise was indeed a huge success.
