GloHELP has done much on HIV and AIDS prevention in Ondo State. On this HAF II Extension Project, gloHELP was contracted by World Bank and ODSACA as a Consultant to further carry out the project on Prevention of Mother-Child-Transmission (PMTCT) in 9 Local Government Areas of Ondo State (Akoko S/E, Akoko S/W, Akoko N/W, Akoko N/E, Ose, Owo, Ifedore, Akure South and Akure North).
Using the Minimum Prevention Package of Intervention (MPPI) strategy of Structural, Behavioural and Biomedical, gloHELP intervention on Structural component was done through Advocacy and Courtesy visits to stakeholders of the Communities of Intervention. Behavioral, through Production of IEC materials, Training of Community Volunteers, Demand creation for ANC/HCT services through referrals and linkages between pregnant women and Government Health Facilities. In its Biomedical Pregnant women were registered for ANC and HIV Counseling and Testing services in selected Health Facilities across the nine LGAs of intervention.
During the implementation, a total of Two thousand and thirty three pregnant women were reached and referred for ANC and HCT services compared with the one thousand eight hundred (1,800) target given. Five (5) pregnant women were reactive, four of them were placed on treatment immediately, while the remaining one is at the denial stage and being followed-up by the assigned Mentor Mother.
Sustainability structures were put in place with the Local Action Committee on AIDS Managers (LACA Managers), Community Health Committee Chairmen, Religious Leaders, distribution of flyers in health centers, Community Branding (Billboards) placed in strategic places with PMTCT messages in each of the nine (9) LGAs of intervention to sustain the project. Also, Community Health Committee members and Community Volunteers have keyed into the existing structure of Government “Abiye” program and the Performance Based Projects (PBF) in each LGA.
